Another day

February 3, 2009

Todays news- I booked my seat at a green smoothies work shop given by Victoria and Valya Boutenko! I am really happy to have the opportunity to both see these lovely people and also to get a look at the other raw foodies out there. Maybe I will find some kindred spirits amongst them. Maybe they have some good places they can suggest to go out to dinner :)

My family are pretty sure you cant take me anywhere and they are probably right. It used to be difficult enough when I didnt eat carbs and I would go out and try and find one thing that didnt come with bread, rice, potatoes or couscous- I’ll have the salad please.

Today I biked to work, ran intervals at the gym, swam, did feldenkrais, and then biked home. I was supposed to have a hapkido class but we werent very organised and I will start next week. I wonder if I get my red belt? By the end of this year I could be a blackbelt- oooh exciting. That’s where your training really begins.

After all of that sweating I was exhausted and when I got home to a fruitbowl full of pineapples (god bless summer eh) I thought the easiest way to go was a pineapple and grape smoothie.

I had also been experimenting, as you do, and had some crackers drying in the oven.

They were made of

2 cups sprouted wheat

1 cup sprouted sesame seeds

1/2 cup ground linseed

1tsp agave nectar

1tsp brewers yeast

1tsp brown rice miso

salt

I blended them into a paste with some water- it smelled all nice and fermenty, and then I spread it on a baking paper on a tray and put it in the oven on a really low temp for ages. I turned it over once.

It turned out to be a really hard crunchy cracker with that nice sweet yeasty smell that bread has. It was also almost sour in I guess a grainy way- boy I am going to have to check out a better way of describing food :)

Any way I ate some and so did M who found them very morish and soon half of the tray was gone.

I ordered some rye from the health food shop so will give that a go next time. Maybe with some sprouted buckwheat as I recently found how easy that is to sprout.

I think I have found my rhythm with the soaking, drying, ‘cooking’ and all and it just keeps getting easier. Also I decided I wont go back to eating much cooked food at the end of my 6 week experiment. Who can be bothered with all that cooking? I love how clean my diet is.

See ya tomorrow

Day 33

February 2, 2009

Really scratching for something to write today…

I went into my fav health food shop and bought some of the food recommended in Brendan’s book Thrive, I got some Yerba-mate, dulse and maca as well as replenishing my stevia supply.

I did a pretty full on work out at the gym, nearly all upper body stuff and my trainer said he is running a competition to see which of his clients puts in the most training days and the prize is 3 comp trainings.  I am so up for that!  Apparently I normally hit the higher end of the numbers anyway at around 19 days per month and the rules stipulate you must take one  day a week off- mine is Saturday when I spend the day eating and resting mostly.

So target is 24 days in Feb and increase all of my weights I dont know how much by because I dont really know what is doable- that is Marks job.  Actually his job is to estimate doable and make it just that little bit harder. Sometimes I curse about it but mostly I am grateful to have an expert on my side,  thinking for me and knowing  what to do next.

Following the recipes in Brendan book has made the nutritional part a whole lot easier too.

It is great to have the wisdom of those who have gone before you at your disposal.

See ya

Running

February 1, 2009

This morning I got up at 4.30 am to beat the heat and by 5am I was on the road for my weekend long run.

I dont eat before I run but I do use sports gels along the way.  As I intended to be on the road for about 3 hours I took 3 gels to provide simple carbohydrates to feed my muscles.

I was going t0 run 28km but about half way through my run I decided to take it up to at least 30km, if not a little more. It is hard work for me running that kind of distance and all of my injuries bug me along the way but I relax into it, enjoy the music and then my own thoughts entertain me for the majority of the way.  I tell people I run to think and when they remark the distance is pure craziness I just tell them I’ve got a lot to think about.

So I was out on the road for 3hours and 12 minutes and I ran 32.6km.  I was pretty happy with that.

When I got back I had my usual magnesium drink Endura to replace electrolytes and then I followed the Thrive diet book and made myself a drink that had simple carbs, no fat and 1:4 protein ratio.

A punnet of strawberries, a spoonful of agave, a spoonful of raw cacao and spirulina, 2 spoonfuls of Protein powder and water. Blend and enjoy!

The difference between doing this and my usual everything in it concoction was enormous. I felt instantly better and I was able to digest it effortlessly.

Still following the book an hour later I had another smoothie with more protein in it, dates, spinach, cucumber, and carob.  This one was more like a meal and and again had a much better effect  on my energy levels.

I had to bike to the gym for my feldenkrais class and a soak in the hot pool so I took dried fruit with me and a couple of tahini balls.

For someone of my size a run like I did uses an extra 1800 calories on top of the 1200 I need in a day but you often dont feel hungry so have to pay special attention to getting the nutrition in.

Dinner was salad- I was craving the water content of greens, a piece of essene bread with olive oil and brewers yeast and a handful of pumpkin seeds.

I loved the essene bread but will go easy on it as I havent really eaten wheat or rye much in ages so need to test it on my body slowly.

I was in bed and out like a light by 9.45 -big day
