Nori rolls
Do you love nori rolls? They are the nearly as quick as a sandwich and there are endless possibities for the fillings so they make great healthy kids snacks.
You can fill them with whatever you fancy, sometimes I like to stick with a reasonably Japanese style filling, sometimes I fill them with a creamy tahini coleslaw or raw hummus and finely processed cauliflower and fresh herbs.
Try making long juliennes of carrot, beetroot, fennel, kale and avocado and wrap.
To wrap more easily you can spread a thin layer of mashed avocado over the whole nori. It softens and rolls more easily. Remember to leave a little edge that you brush with water and it seals up the roll so it doesnt open.
Dip in a mixture of tsp of sesame oil, 1/4 cup olive oil, 1/2 cup orange juice, salt, ginger, garlic, pepper to taste. Blend until creamy.
Or what about long strips of avocado, red pepper, spring onion, carrot, cucumber and pickled ginger nestled in peppery rocket leaves or soft endive leaves.
If you want to play with a spiralizer or mandolin then japanese style food is just the thing… make long thick strips and curly fine spirals of your fav veges and roll up with Cauliflower “rice”.
I also love to dip the rolls in a mix of wasabi and Tamari- please dont tell me if these ingredients are not raw. They form such a small part of the meal and without them life just wouldnt be the same. I think it is worth choosing your battles and by all means have a few non raw pleasures that add to your enjoyment of food. The main thing is to enjoy your food. Take the time to notice that your choices are making a difference to your health. That all the little decisions you make to choose raw over cooked, minimal processing over processed and real food over what I recently read described as “food-like substances” leads to a healthier, more vital and ultimately more well you.
